Who Are You? Or Why SEO Means Nothing If You Lack Reputation (part 1)

We talk about respect, we talk about making your visitors trust you in order to trust what you sell, in order to convert. But we forget along the way the simplest principle of the human nature: people don’t just go around trusting strangers.

On the Web you are a stranger, no matter how hard you try to put a face near the words you type, no matter how many videos of yourself playing the smart guru you broadcast on YouTube, Veoh or elsewhere… No matter how convincing your podcast would be… If people don’t know who you are, your words are dust in the wind. You will probably convince a few, using the art of persuasion. But that’s it.

To be as successful as you could be, you have to build reputation. Make people recognize your name.

This is not an easy task, especially not for those who just start doing business online. But you don’t need to feel lost in this online maze of names and make-believe gurus.

There is a place for you at the top, there is also a ladder. You just need to start climbing.

Forget about SEO for a while. Start branding yourself.

If you are the manager of a big company, start branding your people. Be honest and modest in your endeavors. Although it sometimes takes a while, the Web community will always be able to identify a fake.

When you are online your main purpose is to be found. But once you are found, how do you make an impression that lasts?

Come back in The Dog Yard for some of the possible answers.

I believe that everything has to be carefully coordinated: branding, marketing, pr, seo, all efforts need to be directed towards the same purpose. You cannot have great SEO and poor branding. Or have everyone republish your press releases and then run away because your site looks sloppy. As for branding people, that is important online and off line as well. You need credible people to build a virtual community and to attract the offline world (therefore you need an expert who’s a good speaker for events, tv interviews etc). But these are only a few thoughts on a matter open to endless ideas and debate :)
